In the afternoon of April 9, 2013, the m/v Tere Moana was cruising on her transatlantic voyage between St. Martin, F.W.I., and Lisbon, Portugal, when the ship’s officer on watch alerted Moana’s Captain Mathieu LeBrun that a distress call was received on the radio from a private sailing yacht.

Shortly after, Captain LeBrun alters The Moana’s course and begins proceeding to the location of the yacht, about 20 miles away, alerting the maritime rescue service in Tenerife, Spain.  After several attempts to contact the yacht en route, Captain LeBrun learns that a crew member on the yacht is in need of immediate medical assistance.  The yacht becomes visible on the horizon and The Moana cruises over to it. The Moana launches a zodiac with five of its crew members including the ship’s doctor bringing medical supplies and equipment.

Once aboard the private yacht, The Moana’s doctor begins providing emergency medical treatment and stabilizes the patient. In early evening, The Moana’s doctor and crew members return to ship and both the yacht and The Moana resume their voyages to Funchal, Madeira, Portugal.
