Hashtags
Hashtags are used on most social media channels including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest.
The hashtag serves to categorize the content you are posting so that it is easily discoverable. Web users can easily find relevant content by searching for a particular hashtag on most media sites. This allows communities to engage on common themes and interests. Type #borabora into the search field at the top of Facebook, for example, and you will see a list of posts that have been earmarked with that hashtag.
Knowing how to use hashtags is incremental in the success of your postings on social media. Follow these best practices in order to utilize hashtags to your advantage:
Be specific when using hashtags — the more specific your hashtag, the more targeted your audience will be. This usually means better engagement. Cater hashtags to the social network you are using. On Twitter, the hashtags you use should be relevant to the topic you are commenting on. On Instagram, however, you might use hashtags that are more descriptive of the actual photo you are posting. Use relevant, unbranded hashtags. For more information on this topic, you can view the following social network’s guide for hashtag use: Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
Keep the hashtags to five to seven per post and try not to use more hashtags than words on your post. Excessive hashtag use could dilute your message and attract spammers. It is best to use more specific hashtags that are relevant to the post. Don’t use hashtags that are too long or too obscure. Even though Paul Gauguin Cruises represents The Soul of the South Seas, #soulofthesouthseas is a bit long-winded and may not link up with an audience because no one wants to type in that many characters. You also don’t want to be too clever or obscure since you want your post accessible by search terms that aren’t too random or obscure.
